May 2017 Artifacts of the Month | Richmond Sharpshooters Medicine Chest

This medicine case was presented to the Richmond Sharpshooters, Company H, 23rd Virginia Regiment, by the city of Richmond. Embalmed in one of the medicine vials are a small grass snake and a newt. The fate of these two creatures is explained in an accompanying note stating, “Put inside this bottle while in camp Greenbriar River, 1861. Capt. E.E. DePriest, Co. H, 23rd Va Regt.”
