Godey’s Lady’s Book was a monthly magazine published between 1830 and 1878. Prior to and during the Civil War, it was one of the most largely distributed “monthlies” dedicated to women. It contained articles aimed at not only entertaining ladies, but informing and educating them as well. In addition to articles, Godey’s Lady’s Book also contained full color prints of the latest fashions for women of means. This plate is on display in the main bedchamber used by Varina Davis. It’s not surprising that such a fashionable woman as Varina Davis would read a fashionable magazine like Godey’s.
