Joshua Moore was an Irish immigrant. Jennie Lindsay was the daughter of an Illinois senator. He was a captain in the 17th Illinois Volunteers. She was the daughter of an ardent Copperhead. Despite these circumstances, they fell in love and corresponded for three years. Through their letters, author Gene Barr crafts an intimate look at their relationship against the backdrop of war.
