In May 1866, Lucy Richardson walked from Richmond to King William County, Virginia, to reclaim her daughter from their former enslavers. Discovering that she had been brutally beaten, Lucy determined to seek justice. Drawing upon recent archival discoveries this talk will explore how this story went “viral” in 1866, but remains largely unknown to audiences today.
