Peake Series: The Emancipation Proclamation

February 17, 2021 @ 9:00 am 9:30 am

Free Registration required

The Emancipation Proclamation did not free enslaved people everywhere in the United States, but it had a profound effect where it claimed jurisdiction. Join us in the Struggle for Freedom gallery of our flagship exhibition “A People’s Contest” as we discuss the different people that this landmark order lifted up, left behind, and gave a reason to fight.

This series is named in honor of Mary S. Peake (nee Kelsey), one of the many African American women who dedicated their time and lives to education under the most difficult of circumstances. The Peake Series pairs highlights from key Civil War stories in our award-winning exhibit “A People’s Contest: Struggles for Nation and Freedom in Civil War America” with special virtual programs featuring ACWM educators for an unforgettable experience for your students. Join us throughout the months of February and March as we explore lesser-known stories of the Civil War, and look at some familiar ones with fresh perspectives. All programs are free for teachers and students to attend. Simply register for the program you want to attend on our website and join our Zoom meetings every Wednesday at 9 am and 3 pm EST.
