Roughly 118,000 men served in the United States “Union” navy during the Civil War. Wayne Wei-Siang Hsieh is a military historian who teaches at the U.S. Naval Academy.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, is the author of West Pointers and the Civil War: The Old Army in War and Peace, co-author with Williamson Murray of A Savage War: A Military History of the Civil War, along with various essays and articles on military history and military affairs.
