SUMMARY:Crisis at Antietam
DESCRIPTION:The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee was in grave peril. With nearly half his forces exhausted and straggling\, Lee confronted George McClellan’s Army of the Potomac—a Union force poised for a decisive victory that famously slipped from its grasp. Set within the broader Maryland Campaign\, this groundbreaking work plunges readers into the chaos of September 17\, 1862. Join us as author and historian Steven Eden provides a meticulous tactical analysis of the brutal opening hours of the Civil War’s bloodiest single day. \n\n\n\nSteven Eden is a retired Army officer and veteran of Afghanistan. He taught history at West Point and is the author of two books\, including Military Blunders: Wartime Fiascoes from the Roman Age Through World War I\, and numerous magazine articles for professional and historical journals. He specialized in conducting battlefield staff rides for military organizations in Europe and the United States\, including Antietam\, while an instructor at Fort Meade\, Maryland. \n\n\n\nZoom Webinar Instructions / For further assistance\, please contact khancock@acwm.org

SUMMARY:A Nation Unraveled
DESCRIPTION:During the American Civil War\, clothing became central to the ways people waged war and experienced its cost. Through the clothes they made\, wore\, mended\, lost\, and stole\, Americans expressed their allegiances\, showed their love\, confronted social and economic challenges\, subverted expectations\, and\, ultimately\, preserved their history. \n\n\n\nJoin us as author Sarah Weicksel draws on her book and focuses on artifacts—including those in the American Civil War Museum’s collections—and their stories to explore how clothing was central to the ways people waged the Civil War and experienced its cost. \n\n\n\nDr. Sarah Weicksel is a historian and material culture scholar and the author of A Nation Unraveled: Clothing\, Culture\, and Violence in the American Civil War Era (UNC Press\, 2026). She currently serves as the executive director of the American Historical Association and previously worked at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Her writing focuses on the American Civil War\, emancipation\, military history\, gender history\, and material culture. Weicksel earned a PhD in history from the University of Chicago\, an MA in American material culture from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware\, and a BA in history from Yale University. \n\n\n\nMember Reception at 5 PM
