Planning under way for new Museum at Historic Tredegar site
Site preparation for our new museum building began in late July. The 28,500 square-foot structure, to be located between the historic Pattern and Administration Buildings, will be set into the hillside and will incorporate ruins from the historic Tredegar Iron Works. The building plan offers expanded gallery spaces, an experience theater, and greatly improved storage and preservation areas for the Museum’s renowned collections of Civil War artifacts.
Other planned enhancements at the Tredegar site include installation of “Tredegar Works,” a self-guided tour of the historic iron works site, “Water Works,” an interactive water exhibit designed to use Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math to engage young visitors, and conversion of the historic Foundry Building into multiple-use space for meetings, weddings and other events.
Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, with a tentative opening in early 2019.
