Let us help you plan the perfect Civil War experience for your group’s needs! Groups of 15 people or more are eligible for hands-on and artifact-driven programs, where we guide you through the complexities of the Civil War and its legacies. All programs can be adapted for various ages, interests levels, and abilities.

Programs are subject to availability. If you need to cancel, we kindly request that you inform us at least 24 hours in advance. If you cancel within 24 hours of your scheduled booking, the cost of the original program will still apply. Book early to ensure availability.

“A People’s Contest” Exhibit Tour

In our permanent core exhibit, A People’s Contest: Struggles for Nation and Freedom in Civil War America, immerse yourself in the chaos & complexity of the Civil War at a human level. This exhibit showcases hundreds of original artifacts, vivid theater experiences, and captivating imagery. Visitors can gain insight into the dramatic story of the American Civil War and its enduring legacies. Discover the choices made by individuals in the face of war and how life transformed all Americans in its aftermath. This guided tour highlights the diverse stories of Americans navigating through the challenging war years.

Medicine in the Civil War

Despite the immense challenges field surgeons and nurses endured during the Civil War, significant strides were made in military medicine. Delve into the unforgiving world of prevalent medical practices during the Civil War, gain insight into the underlying reasons behind the alarmingly elevated disease rate, and witness a live demonstration of the most commonly performed surgical procedure of that time period – amputation.

Brown’s Island Tour

Explore the rich history of Richmond during the Civil War as you embark on a scenic quarter-mile walk along the James River. Take a fascinating journey through time as you visit Tredegar Iron Works, where the cannon used to fire on Fort Sumter in April 1861 was cast. Gain insights into the events that shaped America’s past, including learning about President Abraham Lincoln’s historic visit to Richmond in April of 1865. Hear firsthand accounts of the triumphs & tragedies that befell the city during the War, and gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the conflict on the lives of its inhabitants, from the joys of life to the poignant reality of death.

Constructed in 1818, the National Historic Landmark served as the Confederate Executive Mansion during the Civil War. Through restoration efforts, the house’s public and private living quarters have been preserved and are now available for guided tours. These tours provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the daily lives of those who once inhabited and worked within the mansion. With an ACWM tour guide, visitors can explore the property, take pictures, and learn more about the rich history of the White House of the Confederacy. The tour concludes with a Q&A session. Appomattox Permanent Exhibit Tour

Take a guided tour of the Museum’s permanent exhibit and explore the intertwined tales of the end of the War and the nation’s reunification through artifacts, photos, and documents. Discover the impact of the War on people’s lives, both during its final days and after the surrender. The ACWM-Appomattox features over 400 objects, documents, and photographs in its galleries, delving into the Civil War and its legacies – from the secession of the southern states to the last two years of the Civil War and concluding with the Reconstruction era and post-war efforts to reunite the nation.
