Support the Museum!

The collection and programs of The American Civil War Museum bring history to life. It is the memories and anecdotes passed down through families that bind together the story of our nation’s defining moment. Tales of a great-great grandfather who fought alongside friend and foe at Spotsylvania, a distant cousin who patched bits of her silk dresses together to create battle flags, or a friend whose ancestors escaped the ties of bondage to secure freedom; these snippets of history are what help to create meaning out of our collection’s swords, frock coats and letters.  Your interest and generous support gives our institution relevance and meaning, and for that we cannot thank you enough.

Planned Giving

Planned gifts provide for the future of the American Civil War Museum. These commitments ensure that our mission to be the preeminent center for the exploration of the American Civil War and its legacies from multiple perspectives: Union and Confederate, enslaved and free African Americans, soldier and civilians is shared with generations to come.

For more information about planned giving or to notify the Museum of a planned gift, please contact Waite Rawls at 804-649-1861 ext. 130 or

The Regents Circle

The Regents Circle was created to recognize, honor, and thank our supporters who have remembered The Museum in their estate planning, either by a provision in their wills or another form of deferred gift. If you have already made a planned gift for The American Civil War Museum, we hope that you will share those plans with us so that we can welcome you to the Regents Circle. As a Regents Circle participant you will receive invitations to selected events and programs. With your permission, you will also be acknowledged in our yearly Annual Report.

Flag Conservation Program

In 1993 the Museum initiated a long-term Flag Conservation Program to conserve, increase access, and allow further research of the most definitive collection of Civil War flags in existence.

The program has seen the establishment of a flag storage facility and several research and access programs. It also has made possible continued education and research efforts, including the publication of an illustrated index of the wartime flags, workshops and other programs and services. The Conservation Program’s sponsorship activities conserved more than forty flags in the collection for exhibition, several of which were specifically sponsored by groups or individuals. However, this is only a small portion of our extensive collection. Ideally, flags are sent out to specialists in curatorial fabric conservation, a costly but necessary treatment that will protect for future generations these fragile fabric symbols of soldiers that fought and died in the American Civil War.
