Listen to the story of Martha Ann Fields, an enslaved cook and one of the unsung heroes of Hampton Roads. She escaped with her eight children, seeking freedom at Fort Monroe. Historical Interpreter and award-winning Djelimusa (African storyteller) Valerie Davis captures this formerly enslaved woman’s physical, historical, and spiritual essence from the Nutshell Plantation in Hanover County. Martha Ann’s story is a testament to faith and courage.
