Early in the Civil War, some officers in the Union Army command tried to have Ulysses S. Grant removed from his command by complaining to President Lincoln that Grant was little more than a bumbling drunkard.  Lincoln, though, noted Grant’s success on the battlefield and turned the complaint on its head: “Tell me the brand of whiskey that Grant drinks.  I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals.”
