Stonewall Jackson’s Winter Operations

December 3 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

When examined apart from the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, these earlier military activities reveal a starkly different portrait of the enigmatic general, “Stonewall” Jackson. Rather than lightning-quick maneuvers and tactical victories, Jackson faced significant challenges, made mistakes and miscalculations, and led a series of unsuccessful operations.

Join historian and author Timothy R. Snyder as he draws on extensive primary source research—including official reports, letters, diaries, and newspapers—to fundamentally reshape perceptions of the fabled Confederate general and present a more accurate historical portrait of the man and his early military career.

Timothy R. Snyder earned an MA in history from Shippensburg University in 1999. He is the author of “Trembling in the Balance: The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal during the Civil War” (2011) and has published articles in numerous journals, magazines, and newsletters. His research focuses on Maryland’s political and military history during the secession crisis and Civil War, as well as loyalty and allegiance in the border states. With family ties to both the Union Army and Gettysburg civilian Jennie Wade, Snyder brings a personal connection to Civil War history.
